What is Rapid Shutdown Device?
Rapid shutdown devices are a type of module-level power electronic (MLPE) or microinverter that are installed on the backs of solar modules. They are equipped with technology that can turn off and reduce voltage output throughout the solar system to adhere to PV Rapid Shutdown regulations.
Features of Rapid Shutdown Device
An Essential Safety Precaution
In sunny conditions, with a system working properly, panels are carrying live electricity. In most situations, the system is safe and its panels have conduits that run from one to another and to the inverter.
Certain Emergency Situations are Unpredictable
Some conduits can be damaged and expose others nearby to live electricity. This situation is dangerous for firefighters and other first-aid responders who need to access the area surrounding the system.
Avoid Danger
First aid responders can quickly cut off the power in the conduits, giving themselves safe access to the area around the system.
Types of Rapid Shutdown Device
Rapid Shutdown with Microinverters and Power Optimizers
At the moment, a majority of residential solar panel systems are installed either with microinverters, or power optimizers. As module level power electronics (MLPE), both microinverters and power optimizers operate at the solar panel site, and include built-in rapid shutdown capabilities.
Rapid Shutdown with String Inverters
If you are buying a solar panel system that uses a string inverter, you would also need to have module level power electronics (MLPE) installed so as to comply with NEC regulations.
In this regard, you have two options:
Connect your string inverter to power optimizers.
Connect your string inverter to a MLPE product designed specifically for rapid shutdowns. These can sometimes be more cost effective than installing power optimizers or microinverters.

(Remember to ensure the power line is off and wear PPE (personal protective equipment) insulated.)
Decide Which Location to Install Your Rsd.
You can install RSD horizontally or vertically, depending on your preference.
Make Sure You are Connected
When you're ready to wire the RSD input and output, make sure that the equipment grounding conductor (EGC) from the array is linked in the inverter. The EGC should connect the inverter and array for the inverter's ground fault protection to operate.
Look for the Input Wires
Look for the input wires on the side of RSD marked as "Input" and connect them to the PV array. The positive end of the PV array should be connected to the +RSD input wire, while the negative end of the PV array must be linked to the -RSD input wire.
Then Look For the Output Wires
Connect the RSD output wires t0 the inverter inputs. The +RSD output wire must be linked to the positive DC input terminal, and the -RSD output wire must be connected to the negative DC input terminal.
Install the 24V Power Supply
Open the PV system AC disconnect switch and the PV breaker first to make sure the inverter is disconnected from the grid. Note that the power supply of RSD should be connected to a 2-wire 208V line-to-line or 3-wire 240V line-to-line inverter output.
For Multiple RSD installations
Simply repeat the wiring steps to connect the second RSD control circuit to the second output position on the power supply.
No More than 30VDC
Within the ten-foot perimeter of the PV array, DC voltage must be lowered to no more than 30Vdc, and power to <240VA, within 30 seconds. This is to comply with NEC 690.12 rapid shutdown requirements.
Tips for Rapid Shutdown Device
Unsafe
If your system was installed before the rapid shutdown was implemented, it does not pose risk to you or the building. However, it is worthwhile to install the rapid shutdown switch as per the local guidelines of your state. Not all inverters support the rapid shutdown, so you need a professional to help you with it.
Advised to Get A Professional
This way you won't have to worry about the changing codes of your state. You can easily get an updated version of the system in accordance with the current code of safety of the PV system. This will help you get through the inspection without any glitches.
Possible to Install by Yourself
If you have the right guidelines and right tools for it. If you choose to install the system by yourself, make sure that you abide by all the rules of your local state regarding the rapid shutdown device.
